Nicholas Lever, together with the organising committee, created the Sustainable Careers Expo to highlight to students the need for sustainable career choices. To ensure students are fully aware of environmentally friendly work options is a small but vital step in the way forward for a healthier community.

Project Detail

Nineteen year old student Nicholas Lever has been nominated for a National Landcare Award for his work with his high school St Francis Xavier College and the development of the Sustainable Careers Expo.

In June, together with a group of like-minded students, Nicholas created an opportunity for local businesses and organisations to showcase their sustainable initiatives to Expo participants. Over 40 presentations and workshops highlighted to students a range of environmentally friendly careers.

Information stalls provided a hands-on opportunity for students to discuss options in a wide range of careers including finance, architecture, law, graphic design and solar technology. Tertiary institutions Australian National University and University of New England added a further dimension and presented their range of courses incorporating sustainable practices.

To further enhance the Expo experience, Nicholas produced a booklet that incorporated case studies and a range of resources for students.

The Expo was a valuable chance to learn and network, as well as identify changes that can be made to individual and community lifestyles to achieve a greater level of sustainability. Students also had a unique insight into some of the career paths available that contribute to a healthier environment.

The organisers of the Expo were able to offer free entry, and incorporated a range of green initiatives including recycling all waste, encouraging the use of public transport and the provision of organic, vegetarian food.

The Sustainable Careers Expo was a bold and exciting event orchestrated by a group of environmentally aware students, led by Nicholas Lever, who want to encourage fellow students to consider sustainable career paths.

Nicholas Lever is one of 88 finalists in the National Landcare Awards to be announced in Canberra on 24 June 2010. Commencing in 1991, the Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and groups that make a valuable contribution to the land and coast where they live and work.
