Project Detail
Oatlands local Maria Weeding has been nominated for a National Landcare Award for her role as a passionate advocate for farmers and facilitator of sustainable farm practices in the Southern Midlands region.
Joining the Southern Midlands Council in 1997, Maria was the key driver behind the establishment of the local Landcare Unit. As a farmer on family property ‘Weedington’ and manager of the Council’s Landcare Unit, Maria brings a deep knowledge and understanding of the unique challenges faced by farmers in the area and is committed to providing farmers with the information and resources they need to overcome these challenges and to implement sustainable farming practices.
Maria spends much time consulting with the local farming community and combines this with her own farming knowledge to ensure funded projects are targeted and appropriate for her community.
The Southern Midlands is a region that has experienced a period of severe drought with farmers concerned about the potential long term impact of climate change. Understanding the need for practical information about drought issues, Maria distributed a range of materials to farmers across the region and was responsible for the Council employing an officer to focus on climate change issues.
Maria is very aware of the potential environmental and financial implications of irrigation and has spent hundreds of hours (often without pay) ensuring farmers have access to the best possible information. Maria instigated and organised a large seminar for farmers in February 2010 bringing together key players including bankers, property consultants, irrigation specialists and environmental consultants so farmers could access specialist advice. The seminar was an outstanding success and attended by over 120 people.
Maria is heavily involved with the community through a number of field days and seminars with these events a priority for all project funding applications. Field days have included the management of weeds, non-forest vegetation and recently the management of remnant bush. Her property ‘Weedington’ is often the venue for hands-on activities that have been focussed on diverse issues including how to assess tree decline, weed identification and management, drought lotting sheep and drought tolerant pasture species trials.
Maria also understands the importance of engaging the wider community and works closely with groups including schools and Rotary.
Maria Weeding is one of 89 finalists in the National Landcare Awards to be announced in Canberra on 24 June 2010. Commencing in 2000, the Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and groups that make a valuable contribution to the land and coast where they live and work.
