Project Detail

The Rosny and Montagu Bay Land and Coastcare Group has been nominated for a National Landcare Award for managing the conservation of the Rosny Hill area and native bushland.

Since 1993, the Rosny and Montagu Bay Land and Coastcare Group has looked after a prominent stretch of coast and bushland on Hobart’s eastern shore, between the Tasman Bridge and Bellerive. The group is dedicated to creating awareness and understanding environmental issues in the area.

The group hosts regular working bees on Rosny Hill and the foreshore around the bluff. Once overrun with weeds, the group has worked in the area for over three years to remove the weeds, tidy up the site and plant native coastal vegetation.

The group has also installed benches around the foreshore in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kangaroo Bay and lobbied Clarence City Council to extend the pedestrian and cycleways through the area.

The group has formed strong partnerships and alliances with organisations including Clarence City Council, Parks and Wildlife Services, Conservation Volunteers of Australia, Green Corp, Rotary, Rosny College and the Aboriginal Heritage Unit. Recognising the importance of a strategic approach, the group commissioned two Management Plans for Rosny Hill and the Rosny foreshore.

These partnerships coupled with community engagement have led to increased community awareness and support for the work required to protect and restore an area of urban bushland and coastline.

The work undertaken by the group on an ongoing basis has successfully transformed a degraded urban river beach into a vibrant area supporting a diversity of healthy native plants.

The Rosny and Montagu Bay Land and Coastcare Group is one of 88 finalists in the National Landcare Awards to be announced in Canberra on 24 June 2010. Commencing in 1991, the Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and groups that make a valuable contribution to the land and coast where they live and work.
