National Parks and Wildlife Service

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is part of the Office of Environment and Heritage – the main government conservation agency In New South Wales. NPWS was established in 1967 when the Fauna Protection Panel and Reserves Branch of the Lands Department were amalgamated under Lands Minister Hon. Tom Lewis AO. Lewis also establish the charity, National Parks Foundation to assist the NPWS raise funds for conservation. Activities of the NSW NPWS include wildlife conservation, upkeep of fire trails, statistical analysis of species in protected areas, assistance to the NSW Rural Fire Service, mapping of protected zones and to combat salinity and soil erosion.
