Green Nomads – Care for the environment while you travel

In the cooler month of the year we have all seen caravans and motor homes on the roads, and jokingly called them the Grey Nomads, migrating to warmer climes.

Well here’s a new twist on an old theme.  These are people taking the time to explore, or even recapture memories of the past, seeing the beauty of Queensland for the first time, and admiring, in the words of a famous Australian Poet, “the sunlit plains extended”.  This is something everyone would do, if they had more time, taking a responsible approach to the beautiful landscape that is Australia. Green Nomads is a program that combines all three elements, an appreciation of age and experience, a love of travel and environmental responsibility.

Green Nomads is a casual environmental volunteering program targeting Australia’s large transient population, and opening to them the opportunity to work hand in hand with Landcare groups.  Esma Armstrong is the Chair of Queensland Water and Land Carers, the Peak Body for Landcare in Queensland, who run the Green Nomads Program.  She states that this program is important because “with so much conservation work to be undertaken, extra hands are needed and the Green Nomads is an innovative new program that targets Australia’s large transient population, who can, through the program, volunteer with community environmental groups to undertake conservation work in the communities they travel through.”

By joining the program travellers are able to access numerous volunteering opportunities with local community natural resource management (NRM) groups throughout Queensland to undertake activities, including community education and manual labour based activities such as tree planting, turtle counting, water quality monitoring, while they travel around our beautiful state. The program will provide opportunities to link with people of a similar demographic, develop stronger ties to the communities they visit and to develop into environmentally responsible travelers, helping to ensure that our unique environment is cared for and protected.

The Green Nomads program is hoping to become a National initiative within the next couple of years.
