Honour your young environmental heroes today

The 2011 State & Territory Landcare Awards search for the next Be Natural Young Landcare Leader

Nominations are still open* for the Be Natural Young Landcare Leader category in the 2011 State and Territory Awards, which is open to inspirational young environmentalists aged between 15 and 30.

The Be Natural Young Landcare Leader Award will be made to an individual who works on on-ground environmental activities on a voluntary basis or promotes Landcare through awareness or promotional activities.  People who work in a variety of environmental activities including Coastcare, sustainable agriculture or general sustainability can also be nominated.

The Young Landcare Leader can also be someone who has demonstrated leadership through the encouragement of others in promoting or implementing environmental activities, or someone who has trained and help others in a wide variety of sustainability initiatives.

Erin Rowe from the Hawkesbury region in New South Wales picked up the Young Landcare Leader Award at the National Landcare Awards in 2010 as a result of her amazing work with a number of youth groups, as well as the part she played in the creation of the Hawkesbury Young Landcare Group. Erin fully acknowledges how important the award has been to the Landcare groups and network she works with.

“Winning Young Landcare Leader provided me with many opportunities to expand my Landcare group, network with other land carers and generate funding for my group. I was able to get continued and also new support from the local Landcare groups in my area and allowed me an avenue to show that it is important to integrate young people into Landcare,” Erin said.

“It also raised the morale of my current volunteers and showed that Young Australians can have a positive impact on the environment too,” she added.

The Landcare Awards recognise the invaluable work done by committed volunteers across the country on a daily basis protecting and restoring our natural resources.  All winners from the 2011 State and Territory Awards will go forward as nominees in the biennial National Landcare Awards which will take place in 2012.

Don’t let the opportunity slip by to nominate your young environmental hero today!
