Landcare Australia gets involved in the Avatar One Million Home Tree Initiative
Earth Day Network and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment have recently embarked on an important journey to plant one million trees worldwide during 2010 and have chosen Landcare Australia as the Australian partner in this initiative.
30,000 trees will be planted by the Basalt to Bay Landcare Network in Victoria and by National Parks & Wild Life Services with the aid of volunteers in New South Wales. The Victorian plantings sites are in the Glenelg-Hopkins Region, namely Moyne Shire, Hawkesdale, Caramut and Penshust/Mortlake. In New South Wales the plantings will take place in Middle Head in the Sydney Harbour Region.
The 30,000 trees will be maintained by the groups who plant them and the trees that are planted will be native species to the areas. The environmental outcomes of the project include enhanced biodiversity, the creation of habitat for threatened flora and fauna, and a consolidation of vegetation links across the chosen reserves.
The Avatar One Million Home Tree Initiative will build on the environmental message of Avatar to expand public recognition of the vital role trees play in preserving life on Earth. The initiative is currently working with leading environmental and reforestation organisations in 15 countries to bring global attention to the importance of trees in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere.
