Landcare Australia supports carbon sequestration initiatives

Landcare Australia welcomes any proposal that encourages landholder participation in climate change mitigation.  Landholders have long pulled their weight in contributing to Australia’s commitments and should be able to be rewarded through access to a rigorous scheme that recognises abatement in the land use sector. In the absence of a domestic compliance market it is critical that landholders have access to international opportunities and that additional domestic voluntary action is supported.

Further work is required to ensure that landholders, natural resource management groups, corporate Australia and the wider community understand the opportunities and also the potential long term implications of carbon farming in the Australian landscape.

Landcare Australia is pleased that the strong role that the Landcare movement plays in facilitating adoption of best practice amongst landholders has been recognised and will support any mechanism by which landholders can be rewarded for carbon sequestration initiatives that achieve multiple environmental and social outcomes.
