Landcare Australia has partnered with the mobile phone industry’s official recycling program, MobileMuster, for a fifth year, to run the ‘Old phones, more trees’ campaign.

The focus for this year’s campaign is to give Australia’s iconic coastline a helping hand simply by recycling old mobiles, batteries and accessories.

MobileMuster aims to collect and recycle 250,000 handsets from 5 June to 30 September 2011* (*Applications extended to Friday, 7th October 2011, 5pm AEST.) and provide up to 25 grants of $2,000 to Landcare and Coastcare groups working on regenerating our coastline.

“With over 19 million Australians living within 50 kilometres of the coast, and 19 million old and broken mobile phones lying in Australian homes unused, it seems that Aussies love the beach and holding onto their old mobiles,” says MobileMuster Manager, Recycling, Rose Read.
MobileMuster has long recognised the great work being undertaken by Landcare and Coastcare groups to maintain and protect the coastline including, dune restoration, revegetation, weed management and protection of coastal habitat.

“The funding provided through ‘Old phones, more trees’ will enable 25 Landcare and Coastcare groups to plant seedlingsand remove weeds; stabilising our coastline and protecting vital coastal habitat,” says Ms Read.
The more mobile phones, batteries and accessories collected during the campaign, the more grants will be available to Landcare and Coastcare groups, up to $50,000.

“All Landcare and Coastcare members can help MobileMuster reach this year’s target simply by rounding up and handing in their old mobiles and accessories at their nearest collection point, as well as encouraging friends, colleagues and family members to do the same,” says Ms Read.

Landcare Australia CEO, Heather Campbell, welcomes the opportunity for groups working on coastal regeneration projects to access funding through the initiative.

“Volunteer groups across the country are continually tackling a multitude of environmental issues that affect our iconic coastline, and through this program we are delighted to be able to help them continue with their valuable regeneration work while also supporting a fantastic recycling initiative,” she says.

Landcare and Coastcare groups who perform regeneration work on coastal sites are encouraged to submit an expression of interest for a grant to Landcare Australia from 5 June, 2011. To apply, groups must submit a completed expression of interest form, which can be downloaded by clicking here.

Since 2007, the ‘Old phones, more trees’ campaign has enabled Landcare groups to plant more than 255,000 trees across Australia and recycle more than 149,000 kilograms of mobile phones and accessories.

‘Old phones, more trees’ runs from 5 June until 30 September 2011*(*Applications extended to Friday, 7th October 2011, 5pm AEST). MobileMuster will donate 25 grants of up to $2,000 each to Landcare Australia and Coastcare groups.
