The Australian Framework for Landcare is now released, building on twenty years of achievements, experience and knowledge since the inception of the Landcare approach.
Coral Love, Chair of the Reference Group responsible for developing the framework on behalf of Landcare communities said, “The Framework provides a foundation to base future development and growth of the Landcare approach and strengthen the Landcare movement.
The Framework process has undergone a number of consultations with the Landcare community over the past year and a half and the aspirations in the document belong to the community.
The bar has been set high with a vision for all Australians to take responsibility for the way they live in the landscape to ensure a healthy environment that supports a sustainable future”, she said.
The Landcare approach is based on the philosophy that people from all communities and cultures can actively take responsibility for the health of Australia’s environmental assets – it’s in our hands.
Coral said, “Landcarers have an important leadership role within their communities in addressing ongoing and emerging challenges associated with the risks of climate change, access to safe food and water supplies, and the stability and health of environmental assets across the country”.
For the last two decades the Landcare movement, with support from partners, has changed the face of Australia’s rural and urban landscapes and played a major role in raising awareness, influencing the adoption of sustainable farming and land management practices and environmental outcomes.
Groups and individuals have planted millions of trees, shrubs and grasses; repaired riparian zones and restored water quality by reducing erosion and fencing out stock from riverbanks; protected remnants of native vegetation; regenerated areas to provide habitat for native wildlife; improved groundcover, grazing methods and soil management; and rehabilitated coastal dunes and recreational areas and much more.
The next phase of the Framework is an action plan and the Australian Landcare Council has a role in overseeing its development on behalf of the community.
Kim Chance, Chair of the Australian Landcare Council said, “The Landcare movement has a critical role in meeting the challenges for the future and the Council is committed to finalising the action plan on behalf of landcarers”.
The release of the Australian Framework for Landcare was announced at the Landcare Week launch in Sydney this week.
