SYDNEY: Special, free educational event at North Head Sanctuary makes for a great family outing!

The Manly Environment Centre and Sydney Harbour Federation Trust are inviting the public to enjoy ‘Sunday at the Sanctuary’, a free event being held at North Head Sanctuary in conjunction with ‘Science Week’ and the ‘International Year of Biodiversity’ on Sunday 22nd August from 10am to 4pm.

Showcasing North Head Sanctuary as a ‘Living Lab’ with a wide array of fun and informative, family-friendly activities focusing on the rich biodiversity of the area, ‘Sunday at the Sanctuary’ provides an opportunity for the public to explore North Head, the largest area of bushland in Sydney Harbour.

North Head contains a diverse geology and a delicate and precious array of flora and fauna.

Sand dunes cover the crown of the headland, hanging swamps lie amongst coastal scrub and habitat is provided for the endangered long nosed bandicoot.

‘Sunday at the Sanctuary’ highlights will include:

•       wildlife author Louise Egerton hosting a walk to the Hanging Swamp

•      Aboriginal Art & Storytelling

•      take part in an Earthwatch climate indicators’ survey

•      find out what Manly’s bandicoots eat for breakfast

•      take a walk on the last two ancient sand dunes in Sydney Harbour

•      join a Kids Nature Hunt and artwork activity

•      meet Penny the Possum

•      shoot a movie – the beauty of biodiversity (competition for high school students)

•      enjoy ‘Whale Tales’ with David Jenkins (Wildlife Photographer) and Shona Lorigan (ORCCA)

•      ‘Artists with Easels’ – meet local artists as they paint or photograph images throughout the day for the‘Beauty of Biodiversity’ upcoming exhibition

•      take up the Banksia Challenge

•      walk and talk with Frances Bodkin, an Aboriginal D’harawal knowledge holder, on weather wisdom and bush secrets

•      create two icosahedrons from bamboo with artist Sophie Hoppe

•      enjoy a barbecue, kids’ activities, entertainment and much more….
